In this letter, by using molecular dynamics simulations, we show that constructing specific structure can further enhance high thermal conduction of GNRs. By introducing a small gap at the center, the average heat flux (thermal conductivity) can be enhanced by up to 23% the corresponding increase in total heat current is 16%. This unusual thermal conduction enhancement is achieved by an intriguing physical mechanism of suppress phonon-phonon scattering. Our findings uncover new mechanism to increase thermal conduction of GNRs.

Enhanced Thermoelectric Figure of Merit in Edge Disordered Zigzag Graphene Nanoribbons
We investigate electron and phonon transport through edge disordered zigzag graphene nanoribbons based on the same methodological tool of nonequilibrium Green functions. We show that edge disorder dramatically reduces phonon thermal transport while being only weakly detrimental to electronic conduction. The behavior of the electronic and phononic elastic mean free paths points to the possibilit...
متن کاملTunable thermal rectification in graphene nanoribbons through defect engineering: A molecular dynamics study
Using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics, we show that asymmetrically defected graphene nanoribbons (GNR) are promising thermal rectifiers. The optimum conditions for thermal rectification (TR) include low temperature, high temperature bias, 1% concentration of single-vacancy or substitutional silicon defects, and a moderate partition of the pristine and defected regions. TR ratio of 80% is fou...
متن کاملLarge intrinsic energy bandgaps in annealed nanotube-derived graphene nanoribbons.
The usefulness of graphene for electronics has been limited because it does not have an energy bandgap. Although graphene nanoribbons have non-zero bandgaps, lithographic fabrication methods introduce defects that decouple the bandgap from electronic properties, compromising performance. Here we report direct measurements of a large intrinsic energy bandgap of approximately 50 meV in nanoribbon...

Abstract: In this study, using density functional theory and the SIESTA computationalcode, we investigate the electronic and optical properties of the armchair graphenenanoribbons and the armchair boron nitride nanoribbons of width 25 in the presence of atransverse external electric field. We have observed that in the absence of the electricfield, these structures are se...
متن کاملSuperior thermal conductivity of single-layer graphene.
We report the measurement of the thermal conductivity of a suspended single-layer graphene. The room temperature values of the thermal conductivity in the range approximately (4.84+/-0.44)x10(3) to (5.30+/-0.48)x10(3) W/mK were extracted for a single-layer graphene from the dependence of the Raman G peak frequency on the excitation laser power and independently measured G peak temperature coeff...
